Two Ways to Become a CAE®

There are two channels of access to obtain the designation: learn with the CAE® courses or, if you're a seasoned not-for-profit sector executive, submit a portfolio for Prior Learning Assesment Recognition (PLAR).

To Achieve the Designation Through the CAE® Courses You Must:

  • have at least five years experience in association management or two years and a university degree
  • complete the five CAE® courses
  • successfully write the CAE® exam
  • be a member of CSAE
  • agree to comply with CSAE's Code of Conduct

or

To Achieve the Designation Through the PLAR Channel You Must:

  • have at least ten years of experience in association management
  • submit a portfolio of prior learning for evaluation by a panel of Certified Association Executives
    successfully complete any additional steps the panel requires (e.g. challenging the CAE® examination, completion of a Self-Directed Online Tutorial or CAE® course, etc.)
  • be a member of CSAE
  • agree to comply with CSAE's Code of Conduct
